It’s here. We’re just days away from the realization of a new contribution to funk theatre. For two years, I’ve been working with the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute (CCCADI) to bring to life the Afrofuturist, funk ritual performance piece, In the Valley of Coming Forth (IVCF). On November 24, 7pmET, we will present a one night only world premier of IVCF at the Weeksville Heritage Center (WHC) in the People’s Republic of Brooklyn NY. We chose WHC because of the alignment of the site’s history with the themes of marronage, Black self-determination, and freedom within the play. WHC uses education, arts, and a social justice lens to preserve, document and inspire engagement with the history of Weeksville, one of the largest free Black communities in pre-Civil War America on the site of the historic Hunterfly Road Houses. Premiering the Afrofuturist work, IVCF, at the historic site of Weeksville brings the past, present, and future together in one incredible night of funk, fun, and freedom dreaming.
